Description

A loan to a cousin and original member of the “Memphis Mafia”

Personal check, 6 x 2.75, filled out in another hand and signed by Presley, payable to Gene Smith for $1,000, September 24, 1974. The memo line indicates that the check was for a “personal loan.” One of the inaugural members of Elvis’s notorious “Memphis Mafia” entourage, Smith was a cousin of the singer and was particularly close to him in the early years of his career. Though they had a falling out in 1962, they later reconciled, and Smith visited Elvis at Graceland on a number of occasions. Smith would later serve as a pallbearer at Elvis’s funeral. Matted and framed with a photo and explanatory sheet to an overall size of 20.5 x 26. Usual bank stamp touching “E. A.” but not affecting legibility, otherwise fine, clean condition. COA Roger Epperson/REAL and R&R COA. Oversized.
