Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Pennsylvania (1719–1806). DS, signed “Ja. Smith,” one page both sides, 7.5 x 12, July 1750. Legal brief regarding the dispute over a promissory note between James Bigger and Alexander Divan, signed on the reverse by Smith. Partial separations along fragile mailing folds, light overall toning, a bit heavier to edges and folds, and some old tape reinforcements to bisecting horizontal fold, otherwise very good condition. In his 1995 reference History Comes to Life, Kenneth Rendell places Smith’s autograph material into the “scarce” category among the Signers. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
