Description

Scottish painter (1796-1864). He is especially known for a prolific series of detailed prints of Egypt and the Near East produced during the 1840s from sketches made during long tours of the region (1838-1840). This work, and his large oil paintings of similar subjects, made him a prominent Orientalist painter. ALS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7.25, no date. Letter to a friend about an upcoming engagement. In part, “I have rec’d your note, and will be most happy to see Miss Scott with you tomorrow to discuss, although I regret the cause of the change. Many thanks for your paying of my coal bill. There is a very pretty circular picture of Italian Ruins, with an evening or twilight affect - hung n the Great Room and close to my interior, by a name which is new to me.” In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds, several creases, a couple small holes to integral second page, and a couple pencil notations. R&R COA.
