Pioneering professional golfer (1871–1963) who won five Open Championships between 1894 and 1913 and who was, along with Harry Vardon and James Braid, a member of the sport’s fabled “Great Triumvirate.” Uncommon ALS signed “J. H. Taylor,” one page both sides, 7 x 9, January 23, 1961. Taylor writes to P. A. Ward-Thomas in London. In part: “I agree with your view that it is years since I have had the pleasure of meeting you at Fulwell and that pleasure is being enhanced by the possibility that we may meet again on February 9th as you suggest. I may add that should I live until March 19th next I shall reach the venerable age of 90 and I shall do my level best to reach it, all being well, and I have not the slightest objection to have my picture taken…. I hear from Mr. Darwin [Bernard Darwin, golf writer and grandson of Charles Darwin] very occasionally and regret to know that he cannot move about much these days. I am happy to say that I keep as well as the years allow and hope to be allowed to keep going a little while longer….” Intersecting mailing folds and mild handling wear with a few tiny spots, otherwise fine condition.
