Description

Signing a ship’s papers months before the outbreak of the War of 1812

Partly DS, signed “James Madison” as president and “Jas. Monroe” as secretary of state, one page on vellum, 10 x 15, February 25, 1812. A scalloped-top ship’s papers for the brig Eclipse of Baltimore, commanded by O. A. Dashiell. The embossed paper seal remains intact at lower left. In very good condition, with trimming as noted, intersecting folds (same vertical fold touching both signatures), mild wrinkling, Madison’s signature a shade light (but fully legible), and slightly irregular adhesion to Monroe’s signature.
