Description

His philanthropic activities and the “odious practice” of a beer advertisement

TLS signed “Bing,” two pages, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, February 11, 1954. Crosby writes to Chet Sampson in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. In part: “I regret that I will be unable to get East this spring for the opening of the auditorium gymnasium at Grosse Pointe…. I would hate to make plans that far in advance because picture schedules being what they are and I have a commitment also to make six or eight TV films next year, I couldn’t give any kind of a definite reply…. I couldn’t possibly take any money for the thing if I did go—certainly not such a large sum as $25,000…. I had hoped, as I told you once before, that a foundation for cancer research could have been set up in honor of my late wife, but there is so much red tape and organization details to be hurdled that it seems almost inconceivable that it would ever develop into an actuality. To do anything worthwhile requires a tremendous amount of money and a lot of professional advice, and the American Cancer Society is probably the outstanding organization now active in the field…. I had my people follow through very closely on the Altes Beer ads, and I believe that they now have effected the discontinuance of this rather odious practice….” A few wrinkles and creases, otherwise fine condition.
