On her private secretary: “A man of the world can take care of himself and trouble no one”

Teacher and humanitarian (1821–1912) best known for organizing the relief organization the American Red Cross. ALS, one page, 8 x 10.75, illustrated American National Red Cross letterhead, [envelope postmarked] July 27, 1903. Barton writes to Mr. Holman. In part: “Your letter confirming the correctness of my mental timetable is just at hand. I shall closely adhere to it…. I find that it will be best, and almost indispensable to take along my secretary Mr. Edward Howe who will go with me from here…. If he was a lady secretary, travelling with me, he would be embarrassing to my friends to entertain, but a man of the world can take care of himself and trouble no one….” Matted with the original mailing envelope addressed in Barton’s hand and a photo to an overall size of 21.75 x 16.25. Intersecting folds (vertical fold between first and last names) and light wrinkling, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
