IN HIS IMAGE: Devotional photo signed by BENEDICT XV

Pope, born Giacomo della Chiesa (1854–1922), who reigned from 1914 until his death. Benedict’s pontificate was dominated by World War I, which he termed “the suicide of Europe,” and its turbulent aftermath. Maintaining strict neutrality, he advanced several peace proposals and did much to aid war victims. Matte-finish 9.75 x 12.75 photo (image size 5 x 7) of an artist’s rendering of Christ, signed and inscribed in Italian in the blank lower border (translated), “The Sacred Heart of Jesus confers thanks and blessings upon Maria Gavotto and Family, Benedictus pp. XV, 11-IV-1919.” In fine condition, with some light creasing and soiling to mount, a short tear to extreme right edge, and some light silvering to image.
