Description

Son of President Abraham Lincoln (1843–1926) who served as Secretary of War in the Garfield and Arthur administrations. LS, one lightly lined page both sides, 8 x 10.5, War Department letterhead, April 6, 1883. Lincoln writes to Messrs. Hampton and Dalzell at the Allegheny Valley Railroad Company. In part: “Referring to your letter … requesting, on behalf of the Allegheny Valley Railroad Company, that such conveyance be made to said company as will secure it title to the right-of-way through the arsenal grounds at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania…. I beg to invite your attention to the enclosed copy of an opinion submitted to this department … by the Acting Attorney General, from which it will be seen that the Secretary of War is not authorized … to give the Railroad Company a deed for the right of way mentioned….” Mild handling wear and very slight brushing to last name, otherwise fine condition.
