Composer and bandleader (1854–1932) whose marches take a place among the most familiar works in the history of American music. In 1892, Sousa formed his own band and toured throughout the United States and Europe, in the process becoming one of the best-known musical personalities of the day. In addition to a large body of military and band music, he also composed several operettas, the best known of which is El Capitan. AMQS, approximately four measures from “Stars and Stripes Forever” in fountain pen on a 7.25 x 3.5 slip of Sousa’s personal business letterhead, signed “John Philip Sousa 1929.” Matted and framed with two images and an engraved plaque to an overall size of 12.75 x 10.75. Two vertical folds slightly touching staff, otherwise fine, clean condition. A terrific and impressive example! R&R COA.
