Description

Napoleon writes on behalf of his brother-in-law just days after his defeat at Leipzig

LS in French, signed “Np,” one page, 7.25 x 9, November 23, 1813. Letter to Minister of War Marshall Clark (The Duke of Feltre) concerning his brother-in-law Marshal Joachim Murat, the King of Naples. In part, “If the King of Naples enters upon the lands of Rome with his army and traverses the departments of Tuscany to arrive at the Po, he should be well received and his troops treated as well as possible.” Only a few months later Murat turned on Napoleon and raised 30,000 troops to fight the French in return for a guarantee of his kingdom. This letter was written just a few days after Napoleon’s defeat at Leipzig and the loss of all of Germany. In fine condition, with light brush to signature, fold junction through small portion of signature, and a small contemporary note pinned to lower left (usually missing on these types of documents). Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
