Peruvian-born American illustrator (1896–1982) best remembered for his colorful, sensuous renderings of pinup-style nudes. ALS signed “Alberto,” one page, 6.25 x 8.25, December 21, 1979. Vargas writes to noted collector Lionel Aucoin, shortly after the loss of his wife. In part, “I do not forget my old friends who comforted me in my traumatic grief at the loss of my “Gentle Anna.” One cannot forget the great inspiration she was for me and my work, during the 55 years that we were married. But thou [sic] she’s gone she still continues to exert a tremendous inspiration in my works, some 200 of them that must be finished before I join her, wherever she is. So! I backed down, since I have recovered somewhat my old zest and ambition! I’ve been a month, Sept., all over Europe helping the sales of ‘Her Book.’ I’ve a wonderful reception wherever I went exhibiting 24 originals!” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Vargas’s hand, and signed in full in the return address area, “Alberto Vargas.” In very fine condition.
