Description

With superb signed “Rough Rider” portrait

Signed book: Big Game Hunting in the Rockies and on the Great Plains. Limited edition of 1000 copies (this copy No. 15). NY: G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 1899. Half morocco with marbled boards, 8.5 x 11, 323 plus 476 pages. Roosevelt has boldly signed the frontispiece gravure photo, which features him in his Rough Rider uniform; the signature is further authenticated by the printed tissue guard, which notes that the photo is “signed in autograph.” The book, a combined edition of two of Roosevelt’s earlier volumes on hunting, is illustrated throughout with original etchings and engravings by such notable artists of the day as Frederic Remington, A. B. Frost, and others. The covers are moderately worn (front cover detached) but restorable, the limitation page bears a previous owner’s ink inscription, and the photo bears some very subtle, wholly unobtrusive marginal toning—mentioned only for the very strictest accuracy. The photo itself is otherwise clean, crisp, and very fine, and most handsome for individual display. A superb example of Roosevelt in his most desirable pose! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
