Description

Distinguished author (1811–1896) whose epochal 1852 novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin brought the issue of slavery to the fore of American consciousness and became one of the classics of 19th-century literature. Cabinet photo with backstamp by Hastings, Boston, 4.25 x 6.5, signed in ink on the mount beneath the image. The reverse is inscribed and signed by Stowe’s half sister, “Dr. Charles B. Morell from his friend, Isabella Beecher Hooker, Hartford, Conn., July 20, 1892.” In very good condition, with rubbing and soiling to image (mainly confined to background), light soiling to mount touching signature but not affecting legibility, crease to top left corner and a few chips to edges of mount, and skinning and mounting remnants to reverse (not affecting writing).
