Paying an officer less than a year after the Declaration of Independence

Major general in the Revolutionary War (1727–1800), second in command to George Washington, and, later, congressman from Massachusetts. Manuscript DS, one page, 7.5 x 8.75, January 3, 1777. A military pay order. In part: “To Ebenezer Hancock … Dep’y Paymaster General of the Army of the United States of America: Pay to Peleg Wadsworth … thirty six pounds six shillings & five pence, equal to one hundred & twenty one Dollars, it being for his pay as Major of Brigade in the Service of the United States of America, from the eleventh day of September to the thirty-first day of December last…. Given under my Hand at Head Quarters in Boston….” Countersigned by Joseph Ward. Early hinging remnant to one edge of reverse (lightly showing though) and faint show-through of docket on reverse behind signature, otherwise fine, clean condition. R&R COA.
