Original copy of the Westerner (the annual for Lubbock High School, Lubbock, Texas) for 1954, hardcover, 8.25 x 10.75, 324 pages, signed twice in fountain pen by rock-and-roll pioneer and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Buddy Holly. Holly has signed over his individual “Class of 55” photo as “Buddy,” and has also added an inscription (along with several others) to one of the rear blanks, which he signs “Buddy Holley.” The inscription reads, in full: “J. C., I have had a lot of fun with you the past two years. Here’s wishin’ you luck and success in the coming years.” Holly legally changed the original “Holley” spelling of his last name after a misspelling on a 1956 Decca recording contract; this earlier form of his name is quite uncommon. The yearbook, a virtual time capsule of the era that inspired American Graffiti, contains additional photos featuring Holly, Holly’s performing partner Bob Montgomery, Holly’s high school sweetheart Echo McGuire (’55), future Crickets drummer Jerry Allison (’56), advertisements for such Lubbock establishments as radio station KDAV and the Hi-D-Ho Drive In, and numerous other handwritten dedications to the original owner of the book from other members of the Class of 1954. In fine condition, with mild general wear and a different signer’s inscription written partially over Holley’s signature (which remains dark and clear). COA Roger Epperson/REAL and R&R COA.
