American writer Gertrude Stein (1874–1946) is best known for her novels, poetry, and opera libretti marked a distinctive, playfully experimental, sometimes nonsensical use of language. Spanish-born artist Juan Gris (1887–1927) was one of the seminal figures in the development in the cubism in the first decades of the 20th century. Signed book: A Book Concluding with As a Wife Has a Cow: A Love Story. Limited first edition of 100 copies (this copy, on Arches paper, No. 36). Paris: Editions de la Galerie Simon, 1925. Coarse woven blue cloth with glassine wrapper, 7.5 x 9.75. Signed in ink on the limitation page “Gertrude Stein” and “Juan Gris.” Stein’s characteristically playful text is supplemented by four lithographs by Gris, including one in two colors. The book, Stein’s first to be published in France, is housed in an attractive custom quarter-leather and linen clamshell case. Tears and chips to wrapper, otherwise fine, clean condition. A splendid production from these two pillars of modernism! R&R COA.
