Much lauded and influential Czech-born writer (1883–1924) whose man-turned-insect story Metamorphosis (1915) and novel The Trial (1925) have earned a permanent and prominent place in the canon of modern literature. Mailing envelope addressed in Kafka’s hand to his financée, Felice Bauer, in Westerland, 5.5 x 3.75, postmarked August 9, 1916, signed within his return address on the reverse “Dr. F. Kafka.” Kafka was twice engaged to Bauer, but their relationship permanently ended in 1917.
