Description

Eminent American writer (1809–1894) best known for his collection The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table and the much-anthologized poem “The Chambered Nautilus.” AQS on a tan 6.25 x 3.5 sheet affixed to a larger heavy card, the final stanza from his timeless poem “The Chambered Nautilus,” signed “Oliver Wendell Holmes” and dated Beverly Farms, Massachusetts, September 26, 1886. The quotation reads, in full: “Built thee more stately mansions, O my soul/As the swift seasons roll!/Leave thy low-vaulted past!/Let each new temple, nobler than the last,/Shut thee from Heaven with a dome more vast,/Till thou at length art free,/Leaving thine outgrown shell by life’s unresting sea!” In good condition, with mounting as noted and allover staining and soiling affecting appearance. The writing is clear and dark. R&R COA.
