Description

His “other” presidency: “To authorize you to act as President in the absence of both the President & Vice President”

ALS (signed vertically on the last page), three pages on two sheets, 4.75 x 7.75, August 21, 1883. Grant writes from New York to Professor Coppen[?]. In full: “I have your letter informing me that Gen. [Winfield Scott] Hancock will not be at the Astor dinner &c. Will it not be proper for him—or me—to authorize you to act as President in the absence of both the President & Vice President? If so I authorize you to act so far as my authority goes. It is bearly [sic] possible that I may be back in time for the dinner. The party that I go with start four or five days earlier than was expected when I wrote you before. A portion of the party will go no further than where the two ends of the North Pacific [Railroad] are to be united. If I return from that point I shall expect to be back by the Fourteenth of September. You may put me down therefore to be present so far as the preparation of the dinner is concerned….” The events Grant alludes to likely relate to his post as president of the Mexican Southern Railroad Company, a position he assumed in 1881. In very good to fine condition, with uneven toning to first page, intersecting mailing folds (one touching first letter of signature), a marginal piece of archival tape partly joining the two sheets, and subtle offsetting and show-through from mounting remnants to reverse of second sheet. The writing is dark and clear throughout. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
