Union general (1824–1886) who distinguished himself in the Battle of Gettysburg and later commanded Custer and the 7th Cavalry against the Cheyenne in the disastrous 1867 campaign known as “Hancock’s War.” ALS signed “Winfd. S. Hancock,” one lightly lined page both sides, 4.75 x 7.75, May 12, 1879. Hancock writes from Governor’s Island to Rear Admiral George F. Emmons. In part: “Your communication … informing me that I had been unanimously elected Commander in Chief of the Pennsylviania Commandery (to fill the vacancy caused by the death of our lamented friend and comrade, Maj. General George Cadwalader) has been received. I fully recognize the honour conferred, and shall not fail to join my comrades at their meetings whenever practicable for me to do so….” A hint of subtle toning to edges, otherwise fine condition.
