Description

“THE PORTRAIT YOU HAVE PAINTED OF THE PRESIDENT”: JACKIE acknowledges a touching memorial tribute to JFK

TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, black-bordered mourning letterhead with crest, July 22, 1964. Jackie writes to Mrs. Richard I. Cretella in Brandford, Connecticut. In full: “It is with deep appreciation that I write thanking you for your letter, and to say how touched I am by your wish to present me with the portrait you have painted of the President. Of course I would be honored to accept your offer, however, at the same time, I would not want you to part with something which, through time and association, has great meaning to you. For that reason, I shall leave the final decision to you, with the assurance that I am most appreciative of your thoughtfulness on my behalf. I do thank you, and send my very best wishes….” Accompanied by a color 8 x 10 photo of the painting in question, a printed card of thanks for sympathy, and the original mailing envelope. A touch of mild soiling and wrinkling, small area of skinning to top edge, and small hole to one “o” in text resulting from force of typewriter key, otherwise fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
