German field marshal (1891–1944) who earned the sobriquet “The Desert Fox” for his tactical genius as Commander of the Afrika Korps. In 1944 he was implicated in a plot to assassinate Hitler; given the choice of suicide or a trial, he ended his own life with poison. A document related to the “physical and psychological examination of flight officer cadets,” ordering a list of names of those to be examined and specifying various physical fitness ratings, the lowest of which is “unfit for piloting military aircraft.” Accompanied by a full translation.
