In full, “This will introduce you to Mrs. Lincoln, a lady I commend to your favorable attention.” Accompanied by the original Executive Mansion transmittal envelope, addressed in Hayes’s hand to “Gen. H. E. Paine, Introducing Mrs. Lincoln,” with a notation in another hand reading “From President Hayes.” Mrs. Lincoln, was a Washington socialite, entertainer, and poet, whose stage name was Bessie Beach. She often used her fame to obtain relief for indigents and press for an end to racial discrimination in theatres and other public places in Washington.
