Description

“THE REACTION IN EUROPE TO THE FLIGHT OF APOLLO 11”: ARMSTRONG writes to an admirer and encloses a signed APOLLO 11 cover

Two items: Scarce ALS, signed “Neil Armstrong,” one page, 5.25 x 8, NASA letterhead, no date [circa 1969]. Armstrong writes to Mrs. [Margaret] Helvenston in Xenia, Ohio. In full: “Thank you so much for your kind and informative letter about the reaction in Europe to the flight of Apollo 11. I’m pleased to return the covers but didn’t understand if you wanted signatures on the cancer covers, so I though I better return them unsigned—just to be sure. Sincere best wishes….” Also included is one of the covers Armstrong refers to, a 6.5 x 3.5 commemorative issue with Helvenston’s address and a stamped cachet commemorating the Apollo 11 recovery force, signed in ballpoint “Neil Armstrong.” Mild handling wear, otherwise very fine, clean condition. Armstrong is seldom seen in signed philatelic items or ALS, particularly with a direct reference to Apollo 11! COA Scott Cornish and R&R COA.
