Description

The Elephant Man’s doctor: “I will not fail to do anything I can for the nurse in whom you are interested”

British surgeon (1853–1923) who saved Edward VII’s life with an emergency appendectomy shortly before the coronation and who served as the personal physician to “Elephant Man” John Merrick. ALS, two pages, 4.25 x 6.75, personal letterhead, February 24, 1895. Treves writes to Lady Dorothy. In part: “I will not fail to do anything I can for the nurse in whom you are interested. She is very highly spoken of. I am so sorry that I have so few opportunities of seeing you, but every Tuesday I have to lecture from 4 to 5 immediately after my visit to the wards…. It is most kind of you to continue to take so much interest in the hospital….” Staple holes and faint intersecting mailing folds (vertical fold to first letter of signature), and slight trimming and small chip to left edge of second page, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
