A piece of aviation history lost: “I regret more than I can say that [the old Wright hangar] has to come down”

General (1886–1950) who helped develop the Air Force into a unified separate service. TLS signed “H. H. Arnold,” one page, 8 x 10.5, Chief of the Air Corps letterhead, November 6, 1939. Arnold writes to E. D. Smith in Dayton. In part: “Thanks very much for your letter … enclosing the pictures of the old Wright hangar…. To me it was a real landmark in the history of aviation and I regret more than I can say that it has to come down. In view of the circumstances, however, I can see no other course to take….” Intersecting folds (lightly touching signature) and mild scattered soiling and handling wear, otherwise fine condition.
