Two-term U.S. Representative (1816–1906) who later became a multimillionaire financier. Sage is credited with originating the system of “puts and calls” in the buying and selling of stock. Interesting TLS, one page, 7.75 x 10.25, personal letterhead, February 24, 1899. Sage writes to F. Leonard in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. In part: “Your favor … with enclosure of photograph is at hand. I would be pleased to comply with your request, but it is contrary to any act of my life, in giving a signature where I do not think it ought to exist. If it were intrusted to your hands, I might feel different about it. With this frank expression, I hope you will be satisfied with the return of the Photograph, and my signature to this letter, which will answer for my autograph which you requested….” The photo in question, a cabinet image of Sage—unsigned, of course—has been affixed to the reverse with a few spots of glue. In very good condition, with intersecting mailing folds (vertical fold through first name), light wrinkling, small tear to body of letter, and light show-through from glue. R&R COA.
