American lawyer and statesman (1818–1901) who prosecuted Jefferson Davis after the Civil War, defended Andrew Johnson during his impeachment trial, and served as secretary of state under Hayes. ALS signed “Wm. M. Evarts,” one page, 5 x 7.5, June 30, 1872. Evarts writes from Geneva to Mr. Gibbs. In part: “I shall be in Paris Tuesday morning … before going to London where I shall be for several days. I shall hope to find you & your family in Paris….” Evarts was then in Europe to participate in arbitration for the “Alabama” case related to a ship Great Britain had built for the Confederacy.
