Historic DS, signed with his uncommon full “Neil A. Armstrong” and “D. K. Slayton,” one page both sides, 8 x 10.5, date stamped February 20, 1969. A “field grade officer effectiveness report” for Buzz Aldrin. Aldrin earned high praise, attaining one of the two highest ratings in every “checkbox” category (e.g., Job Capability, Leadership, Human Relations, and Military Qualities), plus glowing descriptions of his personal qualities and abilities. Armstrong observes that Aldrin “has continually demonstrated an ability to apply his outstanding academic background and engineering ability to the most difficult of the operational problems of manned space flight.... He is particularly well suited to his present assignment and is needed as a spacecraft crew member in the national space program....” Slayton has signed beneath the typed statement “I concur with the above rating.” Armstrong’s status (noted on the form) as “command astronaut,” and thus Aldrin’s superior, is particularly significant in light of his role as commander of the Apollo 11 mission. Shortly after this document was signed NASA announced that Armstrong would be first out of the lunar module, and five months later he would indeed become the first man to set foot on the moon. Small tears at file holes, otherwise very fine, fresh condition. COA Scott Cornish and R&R COA.
