TLS signed “Ike E.,” one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, January 27, 1967. Ike writes to Lewis L. Strauss. In full: “As you reach another milestone I want to join your family and friends in sending to you my warmest felicitations. Happy Birthday and many, many more of them—all of which I hope will be celebrated in good health!” Strauss (1896–1974) was head of the Atomic Energy Commission from 1953 to 1958, in which capacity he played a central role in the notorious hearings which ultimately resulted in the revocation of atomic scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer’s security clearance. Strauss was nominated by Ike as Secretary of Commerce in 1959, but Congress rejected the appointment—the result, many believe, of Strauss’s role in the Oppenheimer affair. Staple holes and a hint of subtle handling wear, otherwise very fine condition. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
