Description

Appointing a U. S. Marshall

LS, one page, 8 x 9.5, January 22, 1822. Letter, written from the State Department, to a Robert Trimble, Judge of the United States for the District of Kentucky. In full, “I have the honour to enclose you herewith a commission appointing John T. Mason, Marshall of the United States for the District of Kentucky, and to request the favour of you to deliver it over to him, after he shall have given the official Bond required by law, and complied with the usual forms in such case.” Boldly signed at the conclusion in black ink, “John Quincy Adams.” In very good condition, with several tape repairs to reverse of intersecting folds, a vertical fold through a single letter in last name, paper loss to right edge, a few folds, and lower left corner, and some scattered toning and soiling. Text and signature are both crisp and bold, and overall appearance remains visually appealing. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
