TLS as president, one page, 6.75 x 8.75, White House letterhead, September 20, 1957. Ike writes from Newport to Miss Gwendolen de Veaux Lewis in Santa Barbara. In part: “Thank you for your suggestion that I broadcast weekly to people overseas. While I appreciate the reasons which prompted you to make this suggestion, certain difficulties—including the all-important one of time to prepare such talks—immediately present themselves. It may be that I can make several talks to American audiences in the next months; I believe that in part, at least, they are re-broadcast to other countries….” Eisenhower was then at the U.S. Naval Base in Newport, Rhode Island, from where he was managing the notorious crisis that surrounded the integration of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. On the following day, Eisenhower announced that the Governor of Arkansas, segregationist Orval Faubus, had withdrawn National Guard troops and that the situation had been brought under control, allowing the students to safely enter the school. In very good condition, with intersecting creases (touching one letter of first name), wrinkling and mild soiling, marginal ink notation, and faint block of toning to lower margin. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
