Description

“The President expects to be here on the first of November.”

Statesman and politician who variously served as aide-de-camp to Washington, member of the Continental Congress, the first Attorney General, and Aaron Burr’s lawyer during his notorious trial for treason. ALS, one page, 5 x 8, no date. Letter sent to Major Lennox. In full, “E. Randolph with compliments informs Major Lenox, that an express from the Post office in Philadelphia brought him a letter from the President, after the Major left him. The President expects to be here on the first of November. I have written to him, that I will write to him by you to Wilmington. Wednesday seems a good day for the Major’s departure for that town; and E.R. will be glad to see the Major on Monday or Tuesday.” In 1795, Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton wrote to President Washington, recommending candidates for supervisor for Pennsylvania at the time of the Whiskey Rebellion. Hamilton recommended both Colonel Nichols and Major Lennox. Second integral page is addressed by Randolph to “Major Lenox/on the Wissahickon road/a little below the falls of/Schuylkill.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, a bit of scattered light toning, and pencil notations to bottom edge. R&R COA.
