Highly regarded American poet (1794–1878) of such much-anthologized works as “Thanatopsis.” Apart from his literary activities, Bryant was also an ardent abolitionist and one of the founders of the Republican Party. Four-line AQS from his poem “The Battle Field,” signed “Wm. C. Bryant,” on an off-white 6 x 7.5 page, dated New York, November 21, 1849. The text reads: “Truth, crushed to earth, shall rise again; The eternal years of God are hers; But Error, wounded, writhes in pain, And dies amid his worshippers.” In very good condition, with light scattered soiling and toning, tiny chips and tears to edges, and mild handling wear.
