One-armed Union general (1830–1909) who participated at Gettysburg and commanded the Army of Tennessee during Sherman’s March to the Sea. ALS, one page, 5.5 x 8, personal letterhead, no date [circa 1897]. Howard writes to General Horatio G. King. In full: “I think I shall omit going to our Reunion this year. Please do not let me be a candidate for any office. I saw Mr. Porter (Fitz-John) lately at Morristown. He was really ill tho he made an effort to see me. Gen. G. S. Greene is still young in his 96th year.
