Fading away: “I think I shall omit going to our Reunion this year”

One-armed Union general (1830–1909) who participated at Gettysburg and commanded the Army of Tennessee during Sherman’s March to the Sea. ALS, one page, 5.5 x 8, personal letterhead, no date [circa 1897]. Howard writes to General Horatio G. King. In full: “I think I shall omit going to our Reunion this year. Please do not let me be a candidate for any office. I saw Mr. Porter (Fitz-John) lately at Morristown. He was really ill tho he made an effort to see me. Gen. G. S. Greene is still young in his 96th year. Kindest regards to all comrades….” Intersecting mailing folds (vertical fold to signature), scattered light feathering and a few brushes to text, and mild handling wear, otherwise fine condition.
