Description

The aviator who helped define automobile luxury

British businessman (1877–1910) who, with his partner Frederick Henry Royce, founded one of the most legendary firms in automotive history, and whose name became synonymous with the ultimate in automotive luxury and status. An ardent aviator, Rolls set a number of early aviation records, including the first non-stop double crossing of the English Channel. In the same year, 1910, Rolls became the first Briton (and only the eleventh person) to die in an aviation accident when the tail of his Wright Flyer broke off in flight. Scarce pencil signature, “Chas. S. Rolls,” on a salmon 5.25 x 3.5 album page. An early collector’s notation indicates that the signature was obtained just after his double Channel crossing. Light soiling and toning to edges (well away from signature), otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
