American author (1783–1859) best known for his stories “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle.” Printed DS, one page, 6 x 9.5, April 23, 1847. An agreement wherein Irving grants to the Hudson River Rail Road the right to build on property owned by him in exchange for one dollar. The document is also signed by Sarah Irving (evidently his sister or niece, the latter of whom served as a hostess at his home). In good condition, with light toning and staining and intersecting folds (horizontal fold with near-complete separation through signature; hole at intersection affecting a few letters of first name).
