Prolific American character actor (1892–1962) who was the first performer to win an Oscar (for his supporting role in Stagecoach), an Emmy, and a Tony. His most familiar roles are probably those of Scarlett O’Hara’s father in Gone with the Wind and Uncle Billy in the classic It’s a Wonderful Life.
