British actor (1893–1943) best remembered for his roles in such classics as the Pygmalion, The Petrified Forest, and, most famously, as Ashley Wilkes in Gone with the Wind. During World War II he devoted his energies to the war effort and was killed in 1943 when the plane he was on was shot down by German fighters over the Bay of Biscay. ALS signed “L.
