James became King of England, King of Scots, and King of Ireland in 1685. He was the last Catholic monarch to reign over the Kingdom of England, Kingdom of Scotland, or Kingdom of Ireland. Pepys was a British civil servant (1633–1703) who was promoted to Secretary to the Admiralty in 1673. Pepys is best remembered as the author of a nine-year, multi-volume diary, one of the essential documents of 17-century British history and literature. DS, signed “James R,” and “S. Pepys,” one page, 8.25 x 12.5, October 1, 1988. Document issued to Captain Davis in command of H. M. S. Resolution. Order of impressment authorizing him to “Impress our cause to be by Impressed such and so many able Mariners and Sea-Men as shall be necessary for compleating [sic] the Number of Men at this day appointed to be borne on Our Ship the Resolution under your command.” Document goes on to indicate how the men are to be paid, processed, and those to be exempted. Signed at the top “James R.,” and countersigned at the bottom by Pepys. White paper seal of Admiralty is affixed to top left and intact.
