“ALL KINDS OF LUNATIC STORIES”: FDR prepares to manipulate the press in claiming “literally no part whatsoever” in the selection of congressional leaders

Excellent TLS as president signed “F.D.R.,” one page, 7 x 9, White House letterhead, December 18, 1936. FDR writes to his former law partner, Basil O’Connor, in a letter headed “Private & Confidential.” In full: “On my return I find, of course, all kinds of lunatic stories. The only possible thing I can do is to have the question asked at my Press conference on Friday and in reply to point out that in previous choices of Speakers and Majority Leaders I have taken literally no part whatsoever—either directly or by indirection. Incidentally, this happens to be true and the rule holds. I am too sorry to hear about Elvira’s operation but I am glad that all goes well. Give her my love….” In very fine condition. An outstandingly fresh and bright example with unusually revealing content! Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
