Mafia boss. Born in Lercara Friddi, Sicily, he came to New York City at the age of nine. By the early 1930s he was the undisputed king of the New York mafia. Convicted on 62 counts of compulsory prostitution in 1936, his sentence was commuted in 1946 and he was deported to Italy. (It has been alleged that while in prison, he assisted the United States military in its plans to invade Sicily in 1943). He died in Naples in 1962 and was buried in New York City. Brief letter to an unknown recipient, with last line reading, “You will take me to lunch.” Accompanied by the original da Giacomino restaurant transmittal envelope.
