Description

“ON THE MARCH TO THE SEA”: SHERMAN recalls his tide-turning Civil War campaign

ANS, one page, 4.75 x 7.75, Headquarters, Army of the United States letterhead, November 15, 1880. Sherman writes to Col. Maurice Fagan at the Union League Club in Philadelphia. In full: “‘On the March to the Sea,’ W. T. Sherman, Maj. Genl., Cmdg. Mil. Div of the Mo.” The famous “March to the Sea” began on November 15, 1864, when some 62,000 troops under Sherman’s command departed from recently captured Atlanta. The general’s “scorched earth” policy proved devastatingly effective when, just over a month and 300 miles later, he seized control of Savannah, dealing a crippling strategic and psychological blow to the ever-weakening Confederate forces. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. In very good condition, with light creases and a faint vertical fold (touching a few letters of signature), light soiling and a few tiny spots, half-inch tear to right margin, and small hole to blank portion of note. The writing is clear and dark throughout. Auction LOA John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and R&R COA.
