Description

American financier (1836–1892) whose speculative attempt to corner the gold market led to a financial panic on September 24, 1869 that became known as “Black Friday.” Engraved stock certificate for 100 shares of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway Company, featuring a vignette of several cattle, 15.75 x 7.75 (including affixed stub), signed in ink “Jay Gould” as president. In good to very good condition, with intersecting folds, wrinkling, light soiling and a few ink blots to engraved portion, scattered pinholes, and punch cancellation holes lightly touching “ay” of first name and “d” of last name.
