Description

“A little too social with some of the Germans”

American Civil War financier and railroad magnate (1821–1905). ALS, one page, 8 x 10, Jay Cooke & Co., Bankers letterhead, December 30, 1867. Cooke writes to the Rev. W. W. Farr in Sandusky. In part: “Suppose you see Mr. Duerr and make your arrangements with him. I think it would be well for you to ascertain what objections the islanders have against him—they are prejudiced against him in some way—and then take frankly with him in regard to anything that might hinder his usefulness. I have great confidence in him but it is possible that he may have been a little too social with some of the Germans and may taken wine with them….” Intersecting folds (light vertical fold to last name) faint offsetting and staining to text, and a few brushes to signature, otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
