Newly-appointed astronaut White foresees “the future success of our National Space Program”

Astronaut who was the first American to walk in space on June 3, 1965 and who died tragically in the Apollo I flash fire. TLS, one page, 8 x 10, NASA letterhead, January 22, 1963. White sends thanks to a young lady after being selected as an astronaut trainee. In full, “Thank you for your letter you wrote to congratulate me on my selection as one of the new astronaut trainees. The personal interest which you and so many others like you have expressed in the manned space flight research program is most gratifying to each and everyone of us who are in the program. Please accept the enclosed autographed picture and my personal thanks in appreciation of your kind thoughts and well wishes for the future success of our National Space Program.” Accompanied by the original aforementioned 4 x 5 glossy photo of White, signed in black ink under his pre-printed signature.
