Description

Going “Native”: Welles and Houseman sign up a backer for the legendary Mercury Theater production of Native Son

DS, two pages, 8 x 13, February 13, 1941. An agreement wherein actor Lionel Stander agrees to provide $20,000 in backing for the production of Richard Wright’s Native Son on stage in return for a 45% interest. Welles, Houseman, and Stander have all signed at the conclusion. Welles’s Mercury Theater production of Wright’s novel, starring Canada Lee, opened on March 24, 1941, and ran for 114 performances. Character actor Lionel Stander (1908–1994), long blacklisted as a result of the Communist scare of the 1940s and 1950s, is probably best remembered for his role as Max on the popular 1980s television series Hart to Hart. A hint of subtle wrinkling and light intersecting folds (slightly touching Welles’s signature), otherwise fine condition. R&R COA.
