A Confederate’s classics

Confederate lieutenant colonel, later promoted to brigadier general, who led the 27th Virginia Infantry into battle at First Manassas (Bull Run) and who was wounded at Kernstown during the Valley campaign of 1862. He later became a successful businessman and helped to organize the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. Signed books: The Decameron, or Ten Day’s Entertainment of Boccccio, Including the Suppressed Novels. London: William Sharp and Son, 1841. Two hardcover volumes, 4.25 x 6.5, 358 + 329 pages. Each volume bears the ink ownership signature “John Echols” on the inside front cover. In very good condition overall, with scattered wear to covers (small separations at joints), volume 1 with slight separation to front hinge and lacking leaf 241–242, and scattered toning and foxing. Both signatures are dark and bold. R&R COA.
