Description

Darrow writes of his early following of Henry George: “I knew Henry George very well, and was one of his enthusiastic followers from the first.”

Brilliant defense attorney (1857–1938) noted for his role in the Scopes Monkey Trial and the Leopold-Loeb thrill killing case. TLS, one page, 7.5 x 10.5, personal letterhead, July 7, 1933. Letter to a friend regarding Henry George, American political economist and the most influential proponent of the ‘Single Tax’ on land. In full, “I knew Henry George very well, and was one of his enthusiastic followers from the first. However, he now seems to be as dead as Julius Caesar. I am sorry. Of course I am always ready to aid any radical movement that seems to have a ghost of a chance. Perhaps sometime something may happen - but not very likely during my lifetime.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. The ‘Single Tax” or ‘Georgism’ is a philosophy and economic ideology that follows from the belief that everyone owns what they create, but everything supplied by nature, most importantly land, belongs equally to all humanity. In fine condition, with a few wrinkles and a mild shade of toning. R&R COA.
